Thoreau wasn’t referring to photography when he said this but it certainly does apply. His sentiment is echoed by a famous quote of Yousuf Karsh: “Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera.” A camera will capture whatever is in front of it when the shutter is opened. The issue is not what the camera is pointing at. This issue is what the photographer sees.
